Sherrard Design was frustrated with the number of empty shop units that proliferated towns and villages around the country and was delighted when an opportunity came along to convert a shop unit.
This particular converted shop unit has a perfect location allowing the resident to walk the pier in Dun Laoghaire. Its central location close to coffee shops feels energized.
Once planning was allowed ( planning now not required to convert retail to residential) key to the project was keeping the original shop front. Rather than frosting the window an internal partition wall was created and it has the dual purpose of offering privacy for the residents, letting light flow in and allowing art work to be displayed on. An overall effect of an art gallery was created.
The internal layout was opened up and a classic ceramic Danish stove was added helping to create a hygge effect. The colour palette was predominantly white allowing the interior space to feel vast.
To the rear an urban garden was recovered from an old cement yard and a vegetable plot and greenhouse were created.
